Laurel Burch began her career by making jewelry and selling it on the streets ofSan Franciscofrom tackle boxes. Some local stores began stocking her creations when a businessman took samples of her work toChina. She eventually traveled there herself and discoveredcloisonné, a kind of enamel work, with which she designed paintings and had the designs made into earrings.
Laurel went on to work on cast metals and wood, and to include spinoff products on paper, porcelain and fabric. In 1979, she startedLaurel Burch Inc.as its president and chief designer. In the 1990s she licensed her designs to a dozen or so companies that now make and distribute her creations worldwide.
Cat Drawing For Kids
Laurel Burch was not only an incredible artist, but overcame a tumultuous upbringing, and learned to live with a debilitating bone disease too. Her optimism inspired many, and can be seen in the many beautiful paintings and works of art she left behind. This tutorial imitates one of her favorite ways of drawing a cat, which leaves lots of room for students to complete in their own way.

Cat Drawing Lesson
The approach that works for me is to prep the tables with a sheet of white paper and black marker and jump right into drawing the cat. Displaying a teacher sample is optional. An example of what the kids will be creating can be inspiring for some and offer a simple path for others. You get to choose what works for you.
Tip: Directed drawings are great at the beginning of the year because it gives you an idea of how well the kids listen to instructions.
Start with a circle if children are very young or just learning how to draw. Providing a circle tracer like the cover of a plastic food container works wonders for getting the art started.

The body can be as simple or as detailed as you like. Start the drawing at the side of the cat’s head, draw a curved line all the way around to the other side of the paper.
Add in any final cat body details and then the fun begins! Demonstrate how to divide the cat into sections. Each section is an opportunity to add pattern.
Sometimes children tire of drawing too many patterns so do this project while reading a book. It gives their hands something to do, while listening intently to a story. Beware though, some kids cannot listen and draw at the same time. Many will stop. I probably would. Either way, it’s good for the child.

Easy Cat Drawing
Let’s start by drawing the head and face of the cat. For the shape of the head we start with a circle but then push out the sides a little bit on the lower half, this circle will look almost like it was squished from the top.
Once we have the head in place we can draw the ears by adding rounded triangles to the top. Pay attention to the distance between the ears, you can play around by making them farther apart or closer together. Also add a rounded line on the inside of the ear closest to the middle of the face.
For the face we draw in two dots for the eyes, a triangle for the nose and then 3 lines on each of the sides for the whiskers. Practice drawing cute cat faces in your sketchbook or using the free printable worksheet until you are comfortable with it.

For the full cat drawing let’s start by drawing the two major shapes which are the head (squished circle) and the body which has almost a box shape. The shape of the body changes drastically depending on the pose so this step will be different depending on the drawing.
Then add the triangular shaped ears to the top of the head followed by the legs which are made of cylinders attached to the bottom of the body, you can think of these as popsicle sticks since they have a similar shape.
For the final step we add in the face of the cat and draw the tail which is a tall box with a round end, make the box a bit curvy and you get the shape of a cat tail. Make sure to grab the free worksheet at the top of this page to help you practice these steps!
